A close up of a square of chocolate, coconut and cranberry layered Magic Slice

The FAMOUS Magic Slice recipe is made with a crunchy biscuit base and delicious layers of chocolate, nuts and dried fruit baked with a sweet condensed milk topping!

This easy slice recipe takes just minutes to prepare and is sure to become your new favourite bake!

Close up of a square of magic slice on a white cake stand.

This magic slice recipe is SO easy to make and SO delicious! With a crushed biscuit base, topped with chocolate, nuts, dried fruit and condensed milk, yet it takes just 10 minutes to prepare!

The magic of sweetened condensed milk! Not only does it make amazing condensed milk cookies, slow cooker caramel, creamy lemon slice, coconut ice and all sorts of fudge, but it also creates a delicious caramelised topping for this slice, just by being poured over the top of the other ingredients and then baked. It's SO good!

Why You're Going To Love This Recipe

    • Easy recipe - magic slice takes just 10 minutes to prepare and whilst it looks impressive, to make it you just need to mix, layer, pour and bake!
    • 7 ingredients - you need just 7 ingredients to make this slice, many of which are often found in the same aisle of the supermarket!
    • Perfect for bake sales - magic slice is always popular at fetes, fundraisers and parties!
    • Freezer-friendly - like my other freezer friendly slices, this condensed milk slice is so useful to freeze for last minute 'grab n go' treats.

    What You Need

Just 7 easy to find ingredients to make this coconut condensed milk layer slice!

Note: Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom for the ingredients quantities and full detailed method.

Ingredients needed to make the slice weighed out and placed in individual bowls.
    • Plain sweet biscuits - crushed. Use a plain sweet biscuit such as Arnotts Marie or Nice biscuits in Australia, Graham Crackers in the US, or Digestive Biscuits or Rich Tea in the UK.
    • Butter - melted . You can use either unsalted butter or salted butter in this recipe.
    • Chocolate chips - I prefer to use milk chocolate chips, however dark or white chocolate chips are both equally as delicious in this slice.
    • Coconut - you can use either desiccated coconut or shredded coconut depending on what texture you prefer, or what you have on hand. Use unsweetened coconut.
    • Dried cranberries - or substitute with sultanas, dried apricots or currants.
    • Slivered almonds - these are almonds that have been sliced into little stick-like pieces.
    • Sweetened condensed milk - use full-fat sweetened condensed milk (not skim condensed milk as this doesn't set as well). I use Nestle sweetened condensed milk, however any brand is fine to use in this magic slice recipe.

    Equipment Required

A crushed biscuit base, layered with delicious toppings makes this magic slice a popular treat.

    • Food processor or Thermomix – to crush the biscuits, alternatively you can use a rolling pin.
    • Large mixing bowl - for mixing the biscuit base in.
    • Baking tin - 20cm (8 inch) square baking tin. Greased and lined with baking paper.
    • Oven - I use a fan-forced oven. If you use a conventional oven, increase the temperature by 10-20 degrees Celsius.

    Step By Step Instructions

This amazing chocolate condensed milk slice takes just 10 minutes to prepare!

Note: Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom for the ingredients quantities and full detailed method.

Step 1 - Make The Biscuit Base

Preheat the oven to 170 degrees celsius (fan forced), and line your baking tin with baking paper. Set aside.

In a large bowl, combine the crushed biscuits and melted butter, mixing well until the biscuits crumbs are coated in the butter.

Press the mixture firmly into the base of the lined tin, flattening it down with the back of a spoon to get it right to the edges of the tin.

The crushed biscuit mixture pressed down into the square lined tin.

Step 2 - Sprinkle With Chocolate Chips, Coconut, Cranberries And Almonds

Sprinkle the chocolate chips all over the biscuit base.

Then sprinkle over the coconut in an even layer.

Then sprinkle slivered almonds over the cranberries.

Step 3 - Pour Over The Condensed Milk

Pour the sweetened condensed milk all over the top of the slice.

Condensed milk poured all over the top of the slice in the tin.

    Step 4 - Bake

Bake magic slice in the preheated oven for 30 minutes or until golden.

Allow the slice to cool in the tin before chilling in the fridge until firm.

Use a sharp serrated knife to cut the slice into pieces.

    Expert Tips

    • Line your baking tin - line your baking tin with baking paper to prevent magic slice from sticking to the tin and to allow for easy removal.
    • If you notice that the slice is browning too quickly - place a sheet of foil loosely over the top and continue baking.
    • Mix & match - use any of your favourite nuts or dried fruit! (see my FAQs below).
    • If you'd like a thinner slice - use an 18cm x 28cm (7" x 11" ) slice tin (personally I like the slice thickness by using a smaller square tin!)
    • Chill in the fridge until firm - this will help to cut the slice neatly. If you try to cut magic slice whilst warm it can get a little messy. Have a look at my how to cut perfect slices post for more hints and tips on cutting a slice neatly.

    FAQs

Can I use other nuts or dried fruit to make this slice?

      5 stars
I made this for a friend at work who loves fruit + nut chocolate. It was a last minute bake so I just used what I had on hand which was a bag of trail mix nuts and added some marshmallows. Everyone at work gave it 5⭐️ Definitely make again
