- Rolled oats add texture and a slight chewiness. If you prefer, you can substitute quick oats for rolled oats.
- Nutella – The star of the show! Use as much or as little chocolate hazelnut spread as you like (though more gooey Nutella is always better!).
Substitutions For The Nutella Layer
If you’d like to switch things up, there are plenty of delicious alternatives to Nutella!
- Try using peanut butter or almond butter for a nutty twist;
- Biscoff spread for a caramelized spiced flavour;
- Or a thick layer of dulce de leche for a rich and gooey treat;
- You can also use melted dark chocolate for a more intense cocoa hit or raspberry jam for a fruity contrast to the buttery crumble.
How To Make Nutella Crumble Bars
It's so easy to make these Nutella Bars, which have a chewy oat base, creamy chocolate hazelnut filling, and crunchy crumble on top!
Note: Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom for the ingredients quantities and full detailed method.
- Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, oats, salt, and bicarbonate of soda. Stir in both types of sugar until evenly distributed. Pour in the melted butter and vanilla extract, then mix until all ingredients are well incorporated.
- Step 2: Take just over half of the oat crumble mixture and press it firmly into the base of your prepared pan. Use the back of a spoon to smooth it out evenly. Place in the oven and bake for around 15 minutes or until lightly golden. Once baked, remove from the oven and set aside to cool slightly while keeping the oven on.
- Step 3: When the base has cooled slightly, spread the Nutella evenly over the base. If you prefer a lighter filling, use ½ cup; for a richer, more indulgent layer, go for ¾ cup.
- Step 4: Sprinkle the remaining crumble mixture evenly over the layer of Nutella. Place the tin back into the oven and bake for another 20-25 minutes or until the top is a slight golden brown.
- Allow the bars to cool completely before covering and refrigerating for at least 2 hours (overnight is even better!). Once fully set, lift the slice out of the tin and cut into squares using a sharp, serrated knife.
Expert Tips
- All ovens are different - the slice is ready when the crumble is golden. I specify degrees Celsius (fan-forced) for my recipes. If you're using a conventional oven, increase the temperature by 10-20 degrees Celsius.
- Allow the base to cool slightly before adding the Nutella (this will make it easier to spread).
- If you find that your crumble is overbrowning, simply add a sheet of foil loosely over the top and continue baking.
- Fridge - store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
- Freezer - freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Defrost in the fridge before eating.
Nutella Crumble Bar FAQs
Yes! Nutella Crumble Bars can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week or in the freezer for up to 3 months. Allow frozen bars to thaw in the fridge before serving.
If your Nutella is a bit firm, microwave it for 10-15 seconds to soften it before spreading it over the base. This will make the process much easier!
All ovens vary slightly, but you’ll know it’s ready when the crumble topping is a lovely golden colour. If the top is browning too quickly when in the oven, loosely cover it with foil and continue baking.
Enjoy them chilled straight from the fridge at room temperature or warmed up with a scoop of ice cream, custard, or a drizzle of cream for an extra indulgent treat!
