Thermomix Apple Crumble is a classic recipe with a sweet cinnamon, nutmeg and apple filling, and a crunchy oat crumble. It's even easier with the help of your Thermomix to make this old-fashioned comfort food dessert!
This recipe, also known as Thermomix Apfel Crumble in some countries, and Apple Crisp in the US and Canada, uses the Thermomix to stew the apples to perfection, before preparing the crumble topping.
Taking full advantage of the Thermomix inbuilt scales, it is even quicker and easier to assemble this delicious dessert before popping it in the oven!

Why You're Going To Love This Thermomix Apple Crumble
No matter how long you've owned a Thermomix, or whether you have a TM31, TM5 or TM6, you'll already be aware of how many things are so much quicker and easier to cook!
- Quick and easy - this almost goes without saying, but stewing the apples as well as making Thermomix crumble topping makes the prep a breeze!
- Clean-up is simple - the ability to weigh the ingredients straight into the mixing bowl means that it's just the one mixing bowl and spatula that needs washing up. What's not to love about that?!
- Budget-friendly - there are no fancy ingredients required, just pantry staples and apples!
- Gluten-free variation - the ingredients section includes suggestions for making this gluten-free.
What You Need
Basic baking ingredients and some crisp, fresh apples are all you need. Even better when it's apple season and you find a loaded tree!

Apple Filling
- Apples - a lot of baking recipes specify Granny Smith apples. This variety of apple holds its shape well when cooked, and has a crisp and slightly tart flavour that pairs well with the soft, sweet textures of the baked goods. However, you can choose whatever variety you normally buy for this recipe.
- Caster Sugar - you may know this as superfine sugar. It has a lighter texture than regular granulated sugar and dissolves quicker and easier, resulting in a better texture.
- Cinnamon and nutmeg - I highly recommend not leaving these classic stewed apple spices out!
- Lemon juice - adding lemon juice to the stewing liquid helps keep the apple slices from going brown. It also adds a touch of tartness to contrast with the sugar and spices.
Crumble Topping
- Plain flour – also known as all-purpose flour, this doesn't contain any raising agents. You can easily substitute with gluten-free flour if required.
- Butter - I prefer to use unsalted butter as a baking ingredient. This is not essential and if you usually buy salted butter, using this will be perfectly fine.
- Brown sugar - to sweeten the crunchy crumble.
- Rolled oats - I have specified rolled oats rather than quick oats in this recipe as the larger grains give the crumble topping more texture. Australian Food Standards do not permit oats to be labelled as gluten-free. For gluten free you can substitute the oats with quinoa flakes or chia seeds in the crumble topping instead.
Equipment Required
This recipe uses the Thermomix to stew the apples, and then to mix the topping. You then assemble the crumble and transfer it to the oven to bake!
- Thermomix machine - this recipe is suitable for use in all Thermomix models - the TM31, TM5 and TM6.
- Oven-safe baking dish - I have used an enamel baking dish that I can serve from as well.
- Oven - I use a fan-forced oven, and have provided instructions in the Expert Tips and FAQs section for adjusting the temperatures if you have a conventional oven
Step By Step Instructions
There are just a few short steps to make Apple Crumble in the Thermomix, and it will be in the oven in no time at all!
Note: Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom for the ingredients quantities and full detailed method.
Step 1 - Prepare The Thermomix Apple Crumble Filling
Place peeled and sliced apples in the Thermomix mixing bowl.
Add the water, caster sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon juice.
Cook for 5 minutes, 90 degrees, REVERSE, Speed 1.
Drain the stewing liquid off.
Spread the stewed apples into the prepared baking dish.
Step 2 - Prepare The Crumble Topping
Place the plain flour, softened butter and brown sugar into the Thermomix bowl and mix.
Add the rolled oats and mix again. The crumble topping should not be a smooth paste, you want it to have plenty of texture!
Step 3 - Assemble The Apple Crumble
Sprinkle the crumble mixture over the sliced apple. Do not smooth the surface!
Bake in a preheated oven for 35-40 minutes or until the crumble is golden and crunchy.
Serve with warm vanilla custard, scoops of vanilla ice-cream, or whipped cream.
Expert Tips & FAQs
I specify fan-forced oven temperatures in my recipes, so if you have a conventional oven, increase the temperature by between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius.
Yes, you can follow the recipe and make any adjustments you may need for your Thermal cooker, such as using the blunt blade if your machine doesn't have a Reverse function.
I tend to use Granny Smith or Pink Lady apples for baking as they hold up well once cooked instead of turning mushy, but you can use pretty much any type of apple you like!
Using cold butter that's been given a few minutes out of the fridge works best. The topping shouldn't be really smooth; it should have little chunks that are left as is, rather than being broken up too finely.
A creamy vanilla custard is a delicious accompaniment, especially in winter. Ice-cream and whipped cream are also favourites to serve with it!
Any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat it gently before serving for the best results. I don't recommend freezing leftovers as the apples can become watery when defrosting.
