How to make 'Brownies in a Jar'
It is SO easy to make these clever little homemade foodie gifts. To start off you'll need a 1 litre glass jar (see below for tips on where to buy them). Then it's simply a matter of layering in the dry ingredients, printing out the gift tag... and that. is. it!
Top Tips for making 'Brownies in a Jar'
- If you're making multiple jars, line them all up in a row and place the first ingredient in each of them and then repeat with the remaining ingredients (a bit like a little production line).
- Have a clean dry cloth on hand to wipe down any excess flour from the glass etc as you go (this step is absolutely not necessary but it helps to give you nice straight lines).
- Use a spoon to carefully add each of the ingredients to the jar.
- If you have a bit of room at the top of the jar, simply add in some extra walnuts.
Where can I buy the glass jars?
I'm in Australia and I've found that you can usually buy 1 litre glass jars from Kmart, most $2 shops or discount stores.

Hi. I trialed the recipe and they are great, so I made these for a fundraiser about two weeks in advance. Unfortunately they went mouldy. Could this have been that the chocolate chips were chilled and sweated?? I stored them in dry sealed jars in a warm dry place.
Lucy
Hi Sheryl, yes if the chocolate chips were chilled before adding to the jars that is exactly what would have caused this to happen! I recommend using chocolate chips straight from the pantry/room temperature that haven't been chilled. x

My friend is allergic to chocolate. I can use white chocolate chips but what can I substitute for cocoa powder. Or just omit it?
Lucy
Hi Karen, you might be better using the cookies in a jar recipe as the brownies really need cocoa or chocolate.
Justine
Can i half this recipe for a smaller jar?
Lucy
Absolutely! You'll also need to reduce the cooking time x

Hi I have made these the last couple of years as teachers gifts and they have loved them, Just a question how far out can i make them and how long does the ingredients last in the jar?
Lucy
Hi Maree, you could make them at least a month ahead of time as the jars are sealed.
