    What You Need

Note: Please scroll to the recipe card at the bottom for ingredient quantities and the full detailed method.

    • Brown onion - I use a brown onion but you can also use a yellow or white onion.
    • Clove garlic - finely minced.
    • Beef mince - use whichever fat-to-lean ratio that you prefer.
    • Panko breadcrumbs - or you can also use regular breadcrumbs.
    • Egg - at room temperature.
    • Dried mixed herbs - use your favorites. Parsley and oregano are great options.
    • Worcestershire sauce - Lea & Perrins is the most recognisable brand, but other brands are just as suitable to use for flavouring the burger patties.
    • BBQ sauce - use homemade or your favorite store-bought brand.
    • Salt and pepper - to season.
    • Olive oil - you could use other types of oil for frying too, such as avocado oil or vegetable oil.
    • Burger buns - use any variety you like, such as brioche, sesame, whole wheat, etc.
    • Toppings - lettuce, sliced tomatoes, cheese and pickles (or any of your other favourites!)
    • Burger sauce - this could be BBQ sauce or any of your favorite condiments such as caramelised onions or mustard sauce.

    Equipment Required

For this beef patty burgers recipe, you will need:

    • A mixing bowl and spoon (or a Thermomix).
    • A frying pan and stovetop, or a BBQ grill.

    Step By Step Instructions

I'm sure the kids will love 'building' their own burger!

Note: Please scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post for ingredient quantities and the full detailed method.

Step 1 - Grate The Onion

To make the beef patty burgers, grate the onion and place it into a large mixing bowl.

If using a Thermomix - roughly chop the onion and place it into the Thermomix bowl, along with the garlic clove. Mix for 6 seconds, Speed 8.

Step 2 - Mix The Burger Ingredients

Mince, herbs, eggs, onion breadcrumbs and sauces in a glass bowl.

Add the minced garlic, beef mince, panko breadcrumbs, egg, dried mixed herbs, Worcestershire sauce, BBQ sauce, salt, and pepper to the grated onion.

If using a Thermomix - add the remaining ingredients and mix for 10 seconds on Speed 4. Scrape down the bowl and repeat until combined.

Mince and other ingredients mixed in a bowl.

Step 3 - Form Into Patties

Divide the mixture into 8 equal portions and using your hands, shape them into round, flat beef patty burgers.

5 formed patties on a plate.

Step 4 - Cook The Burgers

Heat the olive oil in a frying pan or cast iron skillet over medium heat. Cook the beef patties for 3-4 minutes on each side or until cooked through.

    * These burgers can also be cooked on a BBQ grill.

Step 5 - Assemble And Serve

Cut the buns in half and top with lettuce, tomato, beef patty, cheese, pickles, and burger sauce.

    Serve immediately.

    Expert Tips

    • Burger buns - choose hamburger buns or soft brioche buns.
    • Burger sauce - you can use any brand of burger sauce you like (I used Coles Special Burger Sauce). You can also use tomato sauce, BBQ sauce, caramelised onion or mustard sauce instead.
    • Burger fillings - I like to use lettuce, sliced tomato, cheese slices, and pickles - but you can substitute with any of your other favourite burger fillings. You can even make a 'burger with the lot' by adding sliced beetroot, crispy bacon and a fried egg!
    • Cooking - the hamburger patties can be cooked either in a frying pan or on a BBQ grill.
    • Prep ahead of time - the beef patty burgers can be prepared ahead of time and stored (covered with plastic wrap) in the fridge for up to 2 days before cooking.
    • Storing - store any leftover cooked patties in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
    • Freezing - you can freeze cooked or uncooked beef patties in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 months. If freezing uncooked patties, place a sheet of baking (parchment paper) between each patty to stop them sticking to one another. Defrost in the fridge overnight before cooking or reheating.

    FAQ's

What is the difference between a beef burger and a beef patty?

Minced meat that has been shaped into a round disc and cooked or grilled is usually referred to as a burger, particularly when served in a bread roll. When served as part of a meal, they are sometimes referred to as a beef patty, but essentially they are the same thing!

What type of meat is in a burger patty?

Although beef mince is frequently used to make burger patties, you can use other types of minced meat if you like.
All types of meat are acceptable, such as pork, lamb, chicken, veal and turkey. You can also combine various meat types to create your own unique burger blend.

What's the difference between panko crumbs and regular breadcrumbs?

Panko breadcrumbs were invented in Japan and are used in many Asian cuisines. They're made from a crustless white bread and have a dryer and flakier consistency than regular breadcrumbs, and are light and crunchy when fried.
Regular breadcrumbs can be made from a variety of different breads and crusts. They're processed into a finer crumb than panko, and can be made with a food processor. They're have more of a bread-like consistency when fried.
Both are suitable for these tasty beef patty burgers.
