Slice Ingredients

Just 7 easy to find ingredients make this magic slice.
Note: Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom for the ingredient quantities and full detailed method.
- Plain sweet biscuits - Arnotts Marie or Nice biscuits in Australia, Graham Crackers in the US, or Digestive or Rich Tea biscuits in the UK all work.
- Chocolate chips - I like milk chocolate, but dark or white chocolate chips work just as well.
- Coconut - desiccated or shredded, whichever texture you prefer. Use unsweetened.
- Dried cranberries - or swap for sultanas, dried apricots or currants.
- Slivered almonds - almonds sliced into little stick-like pieces.
- Sweetened condensed milk - use full-fat, not skim, or it won't set properly.
Variations
- Mix and match - swap the almonds for macadamias, pecans, walnuts or unsalted peanuts, and swap the cranberries for sultanas, currants or chopped dried apricots.
- American-style magic bars - swap half the chocolate chips for butterscotch chips for the classic "seven layer bar" flavour combo.
- Nut-free for school - leave out the almonds altogether, or swap them for extra coconut or sunflower seeds so it's lunch box safe.
How To Make Magic Slice
This amazing chocolate condensed milk slice takes just 10 minutes to prepare!
Note: Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom for the ingredient quantities and full detailed method.

- Step 1: Make the biscuit base. Preheat the oven to 170°C (fan-forced) and line your tin with baking paper. Mix the crushed biscuits and melted butter until the crumbs are coated, then press firmly into the base of the tin, flattening it out to the edges with the back of a spoon.

- Step 2: Layer the toppings. Sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the biscuit base, then the coconut, then the dried cranberries, and finish with the slivered almonds on top.

- Step 3: Pour over the condensed milk. Pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the top of the slice.

- Step 4: Bake. Bake for 30 minutes or until golden. Cool in the tin, then chill in the fridge until firm before cutting into pieces with a sharp serrated knife.
Recipe Tips
- Line your tin - this stops the slice sticking and makes it so much easier to lift out.
- Browning too fast? Loosely place a sheet of foil over the top and keep baking.
- Run a knife around the edges while it's still warm - it loosens the slice from the tin and makes it much easier to lift out cleanly once chilled.
- Want a thinner slice? Use an 18cm x 28cm (7" x 11") tin instead - I personally prefer the thicker version from a smaller square tin.
- Chill before cutting - cutting it warm gets messy fast. See my How To Cut Perfect Slices post for more tips on getting neat squares.

Magic Slice FAQs
It's named after the way the condensed milk works its "magic" - poured straight over the toppings with no mixing needed, it bakes into a golden, caramelised layer that holds the whole slice together.
Store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week.
Absolutely! Wrap it well and freeze for up to 1 month. Thaw in the fridge before serving.
Yes! Swap the almonds for macadamias, pecans, walnuts or unsalted peanuts, and swap the cranberries for sultanas, currants or chopped dried apricots.
Not as written, since it contains slivered almonds. For a nut-free, lunch box safe version, just leave the almonds out or swap them for extra coconut or sunflower seeds.
More Easy Slice Recipes
If you loved this one, here are a few more easy slices that take just minutes to prepare and are guaranteed to disappear in a flash:

Magic Slice
Ingredients
- 250 g plain sweet biscuits crushed (like Arnotts Marie or Nice)
- 170 g butter melted
- 190 g (1 cup) chocolate chips milk, dark or white
- 85 g (1 cup) coconut desiccated or shredded
- 170 g (1 cup) dried cranberries or sultanas, dried apricots, currants
- 85 g (¾ cup) slivered almonds
- 395 g sweetened condensed milk full-cream
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 170 degrees celsius (fan-forced). Grease and line a 20cm square baking tin and set aside.
- Mix the crushed biscuits and melted butter together until combined. Press the mixture firmly into the base of the prepared tin and flatten with the back of a spoon.
- Sprinkle over the chocolate chips, followed by the coconut, dried cranberries and almonds.
- Pour the sweetened condensed milk over the top.
- Bake for 30 minutes or until golden. Allow to cool in the tin before chilling in the fridge until firm. Use a sharp serrated knife to cut the slice into pieces.
Notes
- Line your baking tin - line your baking tin with baking paper to prevent the slice from sticking to the tin and allow for easy removal.
- If you notice that the slice is browning too quickly - place a sheet of foil loosely over the top and continue baking.
- If you'd like a thinner slice - use an 18cm x 28cm (7" x 11") slice tin (personally I like the thicker base from using a smaller square tin!)
- Chill in the fridge until firm - this will help to cut the slice neatly. If you try to cut the slice whilst warm it can get a little messy. Have a look at my how to cut perfect slices post for more hints and tips on cutting a slice neatly.
- Storage - store magic slice in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week or freeze for 1 month.
- Mix and match ingredients - you can substitute the cranberries and slivered almonds for other dried fruit or nuts if you like.
Swap the almonds for macadamia's or pecans, even walnuts or unsalted peanuts would work well here too.
Sultanas, currants or chopped dried apricots could be substituted for the cranberries!

I made this for a friend at work who loves fruit + nut chocolate. It was a last minute bake so I just used what I had on hand which was a bag of trail mix nuts and added some marshmallows. Everyone at work gave it 5⭐️ Definitely make again
