Say hello to the most DELICIOUS dip recipe you'll ever make in your life!

Imagine all of your favourite Mexican flavours... combined to make one EPIC appetiser! Your guests will be raving about this simple yet tasty dip for years to come!

Just like my Mexican Lasagne, Shredded Mexican Chicken (made in a slow cooker) and Mexican Chicken Soup, this Mexican Layer Dip is absolutely PACKED with flavour.

Why You're Going To Love This Recipe

This flavoured-packed appetiser is truly the BEST Mexican Layer Dip recipe ever!

    • The perfect party food - this Mexican Layer Dip is always the first thing to disappear at parties! Along with Spinach Cob Loaf, this is my go-to dish whenever I'm asked to bring an appetiser or a plate for sharing.
    • Feeds a crowd - this serves at least 12 people as an appetiser! Perfect for large parties, Christmas get-togethers or game night!
    • All your favourite Tex-Mex flavours - salsa, beans, guacamole, sour cream, cheese, tomatoes.... all delicious on their own - but when combined into a taco style dip, they taste AMAZING!
    • Quick & easy - just 10 minutes prep time and you're ready to serve! No chilling time required.
    • Kid-friendly - I use a mild salsa which keeps this dip kid-friendly. If your kids like nachos, tacos and enchiladas, they'll LOVE this Mexican dip!

    What You Need

The famous Mexican 7 Layer Dip is made using popular Tex-Mex ingredients:

Note: Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom for the ingredients quantities and full detailed method.

The ingredients for a taco salsa dip.
    • Refried beans - these are cooked and mashed beans that are popular in Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisines. I use the Old El Paso brand which is popular here in Australia, however, you can use any brand you like or make your own.
    • Taco seasoning - you can use a sachet of store-bought taco seasoning (I use Old El Paso brand) or make your own.
    • Tomatoes - I generally use fresh roma tomatoes (but any variety is fine). Finely dice and then remove the excess liquid.
    • Salsa - I generally use mild salsa to keep this dip kid-friendly, however, you can use medium or hot if you prefer.
    • Guacamole - use store-bought or homemade guacamole.
    • Sour cream - for best results, use regular sour cream (not skim or light) as it is thicker and easier to 'scoop up' with corn chips or tortilla chips!
    • Cheese - grate your favourite tasty or cheddar cheese on top.

    Equipment Required

There's absolutely NO fancy equipment required to make Mexican Layered Dip!

    • Mixing bowl and spoon - for mixing the refried beans and taco seasoning together.
    • Serving dish - you can use any type of serving dish you like (large dip bowl, platter, regular bowl etc). I like to use a clear plastic party dish that I bought from Kmart (discount store) so you can see the layers.

    Step By Step Instructions

It's SO easy to make this layered Mexican dip... just 10 minutes prep time and it's ready to serve!

Note: Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom for the ingredients quantities and full detailed method.

    Expert Tips

    • This dish is best prepared on the day of serving.
    • Serve with your favourite corn chips or tortilla chips - so easy!
    • This Mexican dip (also known as taco dip) serves at least 12, making it the perfect dish for a party or large gathering.
    • A tall serving dish (like the one I have used) looks impressive and is perfect for parties - but does take a little bit of extra scooping to get to the bottom layers. For ease of scooping up the dip, you may like to use choose a shallower dish or bowl.
    • Store in the fridge until ready to serve.
    • Store leftovers in the fridge and consume within 2 days.
    • Mexican Layer Dip is not suitable for freezing - enjoy it freshly made!

    FAQ's

What is 7 layer dip made of?

Technically this dip has 7 ingredients but only 6 layers (as the refried beans and taco seasoning are mixed together). The remaining layers are freshly diced tomatoes, salsa, guacamole, sour cream and grated cheese. Combined, these ingredients make the BEST Mexican Layer Dip!

What does Mexican Layer Dip taste like?

It's truly an explosion of all of your favourite Tex-Mex flavours combined! There's the texture and lightly spiced flavour of the refried beans and taco seasoning layer, combined with the fresh tomatoes, sweet and tangy salsa, smooth guacamole, creamy sour cream and the tasty grated cheese on top.

Are Mexican 7 Layer Dip and 5 Layer Dip the same thing?

They are virtually the same, however, 5 layer dip usually includes either freshly diced tomatoes OR salsa, whilst the 7 layer dip has both - and can also include sliced black olives and/or spring onions on top as optaional extras.

Do the beans have to go on the bottom of the dip?

I recommend putting the beans on the base of the dip as they are the heaviest layer.

What should you serve with Mexican dip?

Corn chips and tortilla chips are perfect for serving with Mexican Layer Dip as you can scoop up the dip easily (and they have the perfect crunch!).
You can also serve the dip with vegetable sticks - carrot, cucumber, celery and capsicum sticks all work well.
