What You Need
The famous Mexican 7 Layer Dip is made using popular Tex-Mex ingredients:
Note: Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom for the ingredients quantities and full detailed method.
- Refried beans - these are cooked and mashed beans that are popular in Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisines. I use the Old El Paso brand which is popular here in Australia, however, you can use any brand you like or make your own.
- Taco seasoning - you can use a sachet of store-bought taco seasoning (I use Old El Paso brand) or make your own.
- Tomatoes - I generally use fresh roma tomatoes (but any variety is fine). Finely dice and then remove the excess liquid.
- Salsa - I generally use mild salsa to keep this dip kid-friendly, however, you can use medium or hot if you prefer.
- Guacamole - use store-bought or homemade guacamole.
- Sour cream - for best results, use regular sour cream (not skim or light) as it is thicker and easier to 'scoop up' with corn chips or tortilla chips!
- Cheese - grate your favourite tasty or cheddar cheese on top.

There's absolutely NO fancy equipment required to make Mexican Layered Dip!

- Serving dish - you can use any type of serving dish you like (large dip bowl, platter, regular bowl etc). I like to use a clear plastic party dish that I bought from Kmart (discount store) so you can see the layers.

FAQ's
Technically this dip has 7 ingredients but only 6 layers (as the refried beans and taco seasoning are mixed together). The remaining layers are freshly diced tomatoes, salsa, guacamole, sour cream and grated cheese. Combined, these ingredients make the BEST Mexican Layer Dip!
It's truly an explosion of all of your favourite Tex-Mex flavours combined! There's the texture and lightly spiced flavour of the refried beans and taco seasoning layer, combined with the fresh tomatoes, sweet and tangy salsa, smooth guacamole, creamy sour cream and the tasty grated cheese on top.
They are virtually the same, however, 5 layer dip usually includes either freshly diced tomatoes OR salsa, whilst the 7 layer dip has both - and can also include sliced black olives and/or spring onions on top as optaional extras.
I recommend putting the beans on the base of the dip as they are the heaviest layer.
Corn chips and tortilla chips are perfect for serving with Mexican Layer Dip as you can scoop up the dip easily (and they have the perfect crunch!).
You can also serve the dip with vegetable sticks - carrot, cucumber, celery and capsicum sticks all work well.
