Snack food doesn't get any easier than these ham and cheese pinwheels made from just 3 ingredients!

Just like my chicken, cheese and bacon sausage rolls, mini egg and bacon quiches, homemade chicken nuggets and spinach and ricotta tarts, these ham and cheese pinwheels are party food favourites!

    Pinwheels or Roll Ups?

You might have heard the terms 'pinwheels' and 'roll ups' and wondered which one refers to these savoury snacks made from puff pastry rolled up with fillings.

There's a very simple answer... pinwheels and roll ups are exactly the same thing and the terms are used interchangeably.

So whether you call them pinwheels or roll ups, just know that you're going to fall in love with these flaky, crunchy, savoury snacks!

Why You're Going To Love This Recipe

What's not to love about these tasty little ham and cheese pinwheels!?

    • 3 Ingredients - Forget adding a million extra items to your shopping trolley... all you need is puff pastry, ham and cheese!
    • Quick & Easy - Ready to eat in just 25 minutes - these make great last minute snacks.
    • Perfect For Parties - Who can resist the little savoury bite-size pastries with melted cheese and ham?
    • Freezer Friendly - Make a double batch and pop the leftovers in the freezer. Perfect for lunchboxes, or reheated for a quick and easy afternoon snack.
    • Versatile - Feel free to change up the toppings! Pesto and cheese is delicious, as is salami and cheese.

    What You Need

    3 Ingredients... That Is It!

Note: Please scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post for ingredient quantities and the full detailed method.

    1. Puff Pastry - use store-bought puff pastry sheets. These are available in the freezer section of the supermarket. You 'can' make your own puff pastry, however, it's super time consuming and I find the store-bought sheets are just as delicious.
    2. Grated Cheese - choose a tasty or cheddar cheese.
    3. Ham - choose thinly sliced or shaved deli ham.

    Step By Step Instructions

Just 15 minutes prep time is all it takes to make these easy ham and cheese pinwheels.

Note: Please scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post for ingredient quantities and the full detailed method.

Step 1 - Add The Fillings

Place the ham slices on top of a thawed puff pastry sheet. Top with grated cheese.

Step 2 - Roll And Slice

Tightly roll the sheet of puff pastry until you have one long log.

    Slice into 1-2cm pieces.

Repeat with the remaining sheet of puff pastry.

    Step 3 - Bake

Place onto a flat baking tray and bake until puffed up, golden and flaky.

    Expert Tips

Can you use shortcrust pastry instead of puff pastry?

Shortcrust pastry does not puff up deliciously golden and flaky like puff pastry so shortcrust is not suitable for this recipe.

How do you stop pinwheels from getting soggy?

Allow the ham and cheese pinwheels to cool completely and then keep them in an airtight container in the fridge. Reheat in the oven before consuming (this will keep them super crunchy).

What other fillings could I use?

Here's a few more of my favourite pinwheel fillings:
    - basil or sundried tomato pesto and cheese
    - prosciutto, cheese and sundried tomatoes
    - Vegemite (or Marmite) and cheese
    - pizza sauce and salami with cheese
    The options are endless!

    How do you store pinwheels?

Pinwheels can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 4 days. Reheat in the oven or air fryer before consuming.

    Can you freeze pinwheels?

Absolutely! Ham and cheese pinwheels can be frozen in an airtight container (with layers of baking paper in between) for up to 3 months. They can be defrosted and reheated, or reheated directly from frozen.
