What's not to love about a gooey chocolate chip cookie that's made entirely in a mug and ready to eat in 1 minute!
- Quick and easy - just mix in a mug and microwave, ready in just 2 minutes! This is such a favorite recipe of mine!
- Just for one - this single serving dessert is perfect for when you're craving a little late-night indulgence to satisfy your sweet tooth. The best part about this recipe is that you don't need to make a whole batch of cookies when you're after just a little sweet treat!
- Basic baking ingredients - there's a good chance that you already have everything you need, as the ingredients are just a handful of pantry staples!
- No oven is necessary - this mug cake cooks in the microwave for 1 minute flat.
- Easy clean up - you literally only have a mug and a spoon to wash up!
What You Need
This homemade chocolate chip cookie is a great recipe made entirely from simple ingredients that you may already have on hand.
Note: Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom for the ingredients quantities and full detailed method.
- Butter - salted butter or unsalted butter, either is acceptable to use in this mug cake.
- Caster sugar - also referred to as superfine sugar. This white sugar dissolves easily when mixed with other ingredients and heated.
- Brown sugar - I used light brown sugar in this recipe as dark brown sugar has a higher molasses content, and I didn't want to distract from those little bursts of chocolate chips!
- Vanilla extract - Queen's brand of vanilla extract is very popular in Australia.
- Pinch of salt.
- Egg yolk - use a large egg yolk (55-60g), and it's best to have this at room temperature.
- Plain flour - also known as all-purpose flour. Be careful not to add too much flour, as we want a gooey cookie!
- Chocolate chips - I use milk chocolate chips in this recipe, but you could substitute for white chocolate chips (or dark) if you prefer. It's all about flavour here, so I recommend a good quality brand such as Nestle or Cadbury baking chocolate chips for the best results in your mug cake!

Expert Tips
For those of us who simply adore chocolate chip cookie dough, then you really need this dessert mug cake in your life. And you don't have to share!
- Cooking Time - all microwaves are different, so start by microwaving the cookie for 40 seconds. If it's still gooey on top, cook for 10-20 seconds longer (in 5-second increments) until just set.
- Careful not to overcook - you want this warm chocolate chip cookie to still be a little gooey inside.
- Use a large mug - or split into two mugs, so that your chocolate chip cookie in a mug doesn't overflow when being microwaved.
- Serve while warm with ice cream or cream for the perfect easy dessert.
FAQs
I use milk chocolate chips, but take your fancy! Dark or white chocolate chips are another option. Next time, I'm going to try Reece's peanut butter chips!
This recipe requires only the egg yolk (not the entire egg). You can store egg whites in a small container in the fridge for up to 2 days, or you can place them in an ice cube tray and freeze for up to 3 months (once frozen, place in a small airtight container or ziplock bag).
Egg whites can be added to an omelette or used in baking, particularly in meringues, pavlova or macaroons.
