A bowl of creamy hummus dip sprinkled with dukkah.

The very BEST Thermomix Hummus made with chickpeas, tahini, lemon, garlic, olive oil and sea salt. A healthy and tasty dip that's ready to serve in just 5 minutes!

Pistachios, sesame seeds and poppy seeds, sprinkled on top of a creamy dip.

Nothing beats a healthy and homemade dip!

Not only is 'homemade' a more budget-friendly option than buying dips from the supermarket, it's also nice knowing exactly what goes into the recipe (no extra additives!).

And there's no better (or easier) way to prepare homemade dips than in a Thermomix machine:

    • one bowl
    • quick and easy
    • hardly any washing up.

Just like my other Thermomix recipes for tzatziki, pesto and cream cheese dip, this hummus recipe is sure to be a popular dip to share with family and friends!

Why You're Going To Love This Recipe

This classic Middle Eastern dip is always a favourite!

    • Ready in 5 minutes - from start to finish, you'll have a big bowl of hummus ready to serve in under 5 minutes! No prep time or chilling required.
    • Kid-friendly - hummus is one of the most popular varieties of dip with kids. It's mild flavour makes it a winner every time. Perfect for dipping veggie sticks in!
    • Inexpensive to make - an entire batch of homemade hummus will set you back just a couple of dollars - making it far cheaper than store-bought dip (and without any unknown additives or preservatives either!).
    • One bowl - Thermomix hummus is made using just the bowl of the Thermomix! No other equipment is required... at all!
    • Healthy - packed full of protein and fibre with the added benefit of healthy legumes (chickpeas), hummus is a healthy AND tasty option!

    Equipment Required

You can make this entire recipe using just your Thermomix machine!

This recipe is suitable for use in all models of the Thermomix.

Please note: If you don't have a Thermomix machine, you can make hummus using my conventional recipe here.

    What You Need

Just 6 basic ingredients are needed to make hummus in your Thermomix!

Note: Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom for the ingredients quantities and full detailed method.

The ingredients for chickpea dip on a bench top.
    • Minced garlic – you can either use store-bought minced garlic or crush a clove of fresh garlic.
    • Chickpeas – are a type of legume also known as garbanzo beans. Tinned chickpeas are inexpensive and easily available at supermarkets. Drain and rinse the chickpeas well before using. Reserve a small amount of the chickpea water for use in the dip (optional). Alternatively you can cook your own dried chickpeas to use in this recipe.
    • Tahini – again, easily purchased at the supermarket, tahini is made from sesame seeds ground into a smooth paste. I use hulled tahini in my hummus as it gives it a creamier flavour than unhulled.
    • Lemon juice – use the juice from 1 lemon (approximately 30ml), or use store bought lemon juice.
    • Olive oil – use a good quality olive oil for that mediterranean flavour, and a creamy and smooth dip.
    • Sea salt – taste and season to your liking.

    Step By Step Instructions

If you haven't tried making a dip in your Thermomix yet, I guarantee you will be amazed at how easy it is - no more store bought manufactured dips!

Just 1 bowl, 5 minutes and hardly any washing up!

Note: Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom for the ingredients quantities and full detailed method.

Step 1 - Add The Ingredients To The Bowl

Drain the chickpeas, reserving ¼ cup of the liquid.

Rinse the chickpeas well under cold water then place them into the Thermomix bowl.

Add the remaining ingredients to the bowl.

    Step 2 - Blend

Mix the ingredients for 20 seconds on Speed 4.

Scrape down the sides of the bowl and mix again.

Step 3 - Check The Consistency

Check the texture and consistency of the dip.

If it's too dry, or you'd like the hummus to be smoother, add 1-2 tablespoons of the reserved chickpea liquid and mix again.

Taste and season with extra salt if needed.

    Expert Tips

Follow my top tips for the perfect Thermomix Hummus!

    • Reserve a small amount (approximately ¼ cup) of the chickpea liquid before draining and rinsing the chickpeas. This can be added to the dip to make it smoother.
    • Make sure you rinse the chickpeas well (in a sieve) before using.
    • Use hulled tahini for best results as it gives the hummus a deliciously creamy flavour. You can buy tahini from any supermarket or grocer.
    • For a smoother hummus, add 1-2 tablespoons of the reserved chickpea liquid and mix. The longer you mix the dip, the smoother it will be.
    • For a chunky hummus dip, do not add any extra liquid and keep the mixing time to a minimum.
    • Scrape down the sides of the bowl occasionally while mixing.
    • Use fresh or bottled lemon juice.
    • Taste the dip and season with extra sea salt if needed.
    • Serve the Thermomix hummus dip plain, or add a sprinkling of dukkah, or a mix of chopped pistachios, sesame seeds and poppy seeds.
    • Serve with crostini, crackers, lavosh, vegetable sticks or rice crackers.
    • Alternatively, dollop onto lamb, grilled meat or add to your favourite salad, couscous or felafel.
    • Storage - homemade hummus can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week.
    • Freezing - hummus can be frozen in individual airtight containers for up to 4 months. Allow it to completely thaw before serving.

    FAQ's

Should I use hulled or unhulled tahini in hummus?

You can use either, however, I personally recommend using hulled tahini for an ultimate creamy flavour! Hulled Tahini has the outer shell of the sesame seed (known as kernels) removed, whereas unhulled leaves the sesame seed whole but can be slightly bitter.

    Is hummus good for you?

Absolutely! Hummus is a great source of fibre and is a plant based protein. It contains vitamins and minerals such as calcium, iron, folate, zinc, and B vitamins. The tahini in hummus also contains Vitamin E.

Can I make hummus without a Thermomix?

Yes, you sure can! You can use a food processor or blender instead of a Thermomix. Click here for my conventional hummus recipe.

What do you serve with hummus?

Hummus is such a versatile dip! Serve with crostini, crackers, lavosh, vegetable sticks (carrot, celery, capsicum etc), or rice crackers. Or alternatively, you can dollop it onto lamb, grilled meat or add to your favourite salad, couscous or felafel. Thermomix hummus is an everyday dip that I always have on hand!
