What You Need
Just 6 basic ingredients are needed to make hummus in your Thermomix!
Note: Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom for the ingredients quantities and full detailed method.
- Minced garlic – you can either use store-bought minced garlic or crush a clove of fresh garlic.
- Chickpeas – are a type of legume also known as garbanzo beans. Tinned chickpeas are inexpensive and easily available at supermarkets. Drain and rinse the chickpeas well before using. Reserve a small amount of the chickpea water for use in the dip (optional). Alternatively you can cook your own dried chickpeas to use in this recipe.
- Tahini – again, easily purchased at the supermarket, tahini is made from sesame seeds ground into a smooth paste. I use hulled tahini in my hummus as it gives it a creamier flavour than unhulled.
- Lemon juice – use the juice from 1 lemon (approximately 30ml), or use store bought lemon juice.
- Olive oil – use a good quality olive oil for that mediterranean flavour, and a creamy and smooth dip.
- Sea salt – taste and season to your liking.

Expert Tips
Follow my top tips for the perfect Thermomix Hummus!
- Reserve a small amount (approximately ¼ cup) of the chickpea liquid before draining and rinsing the chickpeas. This can be added to the dip to make it smoother.
- Make sure you rinse the chickpeas well (in a sieve) before using.
- Use hulled tahini for best results as it gives the hummus a deliciously creamy flavour. You can buy tahini from any supermarket or grocer.
- For a smoother hummus, add 1-2 tablespoons of the reserved chickpea liquid and mix. The longer you mix the dip, the smoother it will be.
- For a chunky hummus dip, do not add any extra liquid and keep the mixing time to a minimum.
- Scrape down the sides of the bowl occasionally while mixing.
- Use fresh or bottled lemon juice.
- Taste the dip and season with extra sea salt if needed.
- Serve the Thermomix hummus dip plain, or add a sprinkling of dukkah, or a mix of chopped pistachios, sesame seeds and poppy seeds.
- Serve with crostini, crackers, lavosh, vegetable sticks or rice crackers.
- Alternatively, dollop onto lamb, grilled meat or add to your favourite salad, couscous or felafel.
- Storage - homemade hummus can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week.
- Freezing - hummus can be frozen in individual airtight containers for up to 4 months. Allow it to completely thaw before serving.
FAQ's
You can use either, however, I personally recommend using hulled tahini for an ultimate creamy flavour! Hulled Tahini has the outer shell of the sesame seed (known as kernels) removed, whereas unhulled leaves the sesame seed whole but can be slightly bitter.
Absolutely! Hummus is a great source of fibre and is a plant based protein. It contains vitamins and minerals such as calcium, iron, folate, zinc, and B vitamins. The tahini in hummus also contains Vitamin E.
Yes, you sure can! You can use a food processor or blender instead of a Thermomix. Click here for my conventional hummus recipe.
Hummus is such a versatile dip! Serve with crostini, crackers, lavosh, vegetable sticks (carrot, celery, capsicum etc), or rice crackers.
