A few weeks ago I popped a post on Bake Play Smile about the books that had been shortlisted by the Children’s Book Council of Australia this year. Check out that post here. These books really are the best of the best! If you have young kids (or know someone who does!) and are on the lookout for really good books, then it’s always a great idea to check out the shortlisted books as you know they are going to be fantastic reads!
Anyway, the winners have now been announced in all of the five categories:
1. Older Readers
2. Younger Readers
3. Early Childhood Books
4. Picture Books
5. Eve Pownall Book of the Year
Because I teach seven and eight year olds, I was most interested in sussing out the early childhood books and the picture books. And so we have been working our way through most of the shortlisted books in class and the kids are going to vote for their favourite one at the end of the week. I haven’t told them the official winners yet, so shhhhh!!! As great the Children’s Book Council judges are, I think the more important winner will be the book that the kids decide they enjoyed the most (I’ll let you know which one they end up voting for!).
But here are the official winners!
In the Early Childhood Books category:
Winner – The Terrible Suitcase by Emma Allen
Honour – With Nan by Tania Cox
Honour – Too Many Elephants in This House by Ursula Dubosarsky (this is an early favourite in our class!)
And in the picture books category:
Winner – The Coat by Ron Brooks and Julie Hunt
Honour – Herman and Rosie by Gus Gordan (this was also the official book of National Literacy and Numeracy Week this year)
Honour – Sophie Scott Goes South by Alison Lester

I hope you get a chance to read some of these great books with your kids… they are definitely goodies!
