On the weekend we had my beautiful friend Kylie’s baby shower. We had organised a high tea for her and it was so much fun! We played lots of hilarious games. I never win anything, so I was so excited to win one of the games…. funnily enough it was the dummy spitting competition! Hehe, apparently not only can I ‘spit the dummy’ when something annoys me, I am also pretty darn good at literally spitting a dummy! I was also quite talented at the celebrity baby name game. See I knew there was a reason for reading gossip magazines for all those years. Our super clever friend organised all of the games and they were just brilliant, she truly is the absolute games queen. If you ever need someone to plan a hens day or a baby shower, she is your woman!
Another friend and myself were in charge of decorations and food. I had so much fun making cute little baby shower treats. First of all I made some adorable little teddy bar cars. They were so easy, but a little bit fiddly. Thankfully I had my mum helping me and she is much more patient with little fiddly bits than I am! We started off with little mini Milky Way chocolate bars. We then melted some chocolate and ‘glued’ on the smarties with the chocolate. I liked to use the same colours for each of the cars wheels and steering wheel, but that’s only because I’m a bit obsessive compulsive about these kinda things! You could easily mix and match colours if that’s more your speed…. but there is absolutely no way I could possibly do that! We also cut the smarties for the steering wheel in half so that it was a bit easier to stick them on. After that we used a sharp little knife to cut the tiny teddies legs off (oops sorry!) and glued those on with the remaining melted chocolate. Very easy and very cute! I think these would be great for a little boys birthday party. And perfect for when you get a bit over eating cake at parties!
Next up we made some little teacups. Oh I loved these. While the cars would be great for a boys party, I would totally make these for a little girls party (I’m thinking they would be perfect for an Alice in Wonderland themed party). Love, love, love them. And again, soooo easy! No bake, no hassle, just easy yummy food. So we started off with a couple of packets of Tic Toc biscuits. I only used the pink and yellow ones, but you could definitely use the white ones too. I then melted some white chocolate to use as the ‘glue’. I put a little dab of chocolate onto the bottom of each marshmallow and popped it onto the Tic Toc biscuit. I put the white marshmallows onto the pink Tic Tocs and the pink marshmallows onto the yellow biscuits, but again that’s just me being way too obsessive compulsive! Then another little dab onto a chocolate Freckle and that went on the top of the marshmallow. Finally, a teensy, weensy dab of chocolate onto each end of halved musk lifesavers and they went onto the side to make the teacup handle. And voila!
The easiest way to make both the teddy cars and the teacups was by using a production line. They are so easy to make but a bit time consuming, so I highly recommend having a friend (or mum!) to help you so that you can chat and it doesn’t take quite so long. If no-one’s around to help you, then just turn up the radio and drift off into your own little party food making world.
We also made some beautiful vanilla butterfly cupcakes. I used a pretty simple recipe from a blog called The Alchemist. You can find the link to the recipe here. The cakes were absolutely delicious but I found that they made the cupcake liners a bit greasy looking, so I just took them out of the cases. If I was to make them again, I’d use two liners for each cupcake. I then divided the frosting into two equal parts and coloured one half pastel pink. To decorate, we just cut up some marshmallows to make the butterfly wings, used some sour worms for the middle and drew on two eyes with a royal icing pen. Again so easy but very effective looking.
To decorate the food table at the baby shower we put gorgeous flowers from one of my friend’s garden into vases… very high tea like! Gosh I am so jealous of her garden… there are the most beautiful flowers everywhere. I don’t think I even have one flower in my garden, which just goes to show the extent of my green thumb.
It was such a great baby shower and now we are all counting down until we finally get to meet the little bub. Such exciting times!
